Milford Sound/Piopiotahi

Today we head up to Fiordland National Park. To cruise up Milford Sound.  Milford Sound is actually a fiord, not a sound and we learned all about that.

The day is cloudy and raining lightly.  It’s cold.  Only 6 degrees.  We had torrential rain overnight so that should make for better waterfalls.

You can see fresh snow.  It takes close to 3 hours to drive up and we’re still hopeful for a break in the clouds.  It’s only 119 kms but due to being very curvy and a long single lane tunnel it takes longer than anticipated.  That always seems to be the way in New Zealand.  The tunnel is called the Homer tunnel and is 1.2 km long.

By the time we arrive we are rewarded with blue skies!  It’s windy but so beautiful.

Our ship awaits!

As we approach the Tasman Sea you can see the lighter blue in the water.

We then go to the Discovery Center where we observe the sea life from an underwater observatory.

After we returned to Te Anau we went for dinner at The Ranch Bar & Grill.  Delicious dinner of lamb roast.
