One day in Franz Josef

Our one day in Franz Josef is bad weather.  It’s socked in, torrential rain with thunder.

We found this restaurant for dinner.  It was really good.  There are only five restaurants in Franz Josef

As you can see it’s socked in.  Can’t see the beautiful mountains that we came to see.  😢

Says it all!

Off for brunch.

Our motel…

Since we couldn’t see it all first hand (helicopter tours were not operating) we opted for seeing it on film.  It was really good but made us feel all the worse for not being able to see it or enjoy the many walks in the area.

We ‘borrowed’ this shot from the movie.  On a clear day this is what we should have been able to see!

The weather is brightening so I decide to go on a walk.

The forest is so lush.

I am rewarded by a Chamois on the path.  He seems to be studying me just as I am studying him.  He didn’t seem frightened and eventually went back in the forest.  A chamois is a species of goat-antelope native to Europe but has been introduced to the South Island of New Zealand.

I walked toward the gorge but didn’t go all the way as it was getting late.
