Rotorura

Our first full day in Rotorura we decide to go to the hot springs to relax.  We decide on a place called Hell’s Gate because there are mud pools there.

The entrance.

Besides the mud pool there are sulphur thermal pools for relaxing.

It’s like a moonscape!

Then we head into the shade.  It’s so pretty.

After Hell’s Gate we drive into town and go to the Fat Dog for lunch. Had a wonderful Buddha bowl for lunch.

We then walked down to Rotorura Lake which is quite large.  It’s really nicely done with lots of room for all ages.

This evening we go to a Māori Cultural event.

This is a hangi or earth oven.  Years ago the Māori cooked using a pit, heated stones and hot water which created steam.  The food was covered with woven mats and then covered with dirt.  This shows the dinner we are having.  There is lamb, chicken, sweet potatoes and regular potatoes.

An example of a home Māori people would have lived in.

The “warriors” paddling upstream..

We finished the evening by going into the “Māori Village” after dark and viewing glow worms. It was a good evening.
