Hiking the Alps

In the morning we walk to the train station and purchase a ticket to Wengen.  This is a little higher than Lauterbrunnen and we go there on a single track train.

After walking around this cute town we find a wonderful spot with a great view to take photos.

On the ride up...

We notice that there are people lining the streets and we ask a local what’s happening and they say it’s Sept. 20th and on this day it is tradition that they move the cows down from the Alps to lower pasture before the snows come.  We are so lucky to witness this special day.

And here they come...

This cow does not look impressed that he has a Christmas tree on his head.  Notice the huge bell around his neck.  It makes a very loud noise and you can only imagine the sound of this large herd as they pass through town.  All the cows wear these bells so they can be found when they are all scattered over the hills.

We then take the cable car up to Mannlichen.  Smooth ride.  Great views.

When we disembark we walk over to a restaurant and decide to have a cold beer before heading out on our hike.

It’s really warm up here.  Rather deceiving when you’re up this high but the sun is very intense.

And we’re off to Klein’s Scheidegg which should take approximately 1.5 hours.  Lots of great hiking trails and the weather couldn’t be better.

Well kept trails.

We’re not really prepared as we should really have hiking boots on.  Sketchers just don’t cut it as we find out.

The end is in sight...

We stop at a restaurant before catching our ride back down to Lauterbrunnen.  I have a traditional dish called Rosti.  It was so good...mainly hash browns with cheese and bacon and a fried egg on top.  Definitely filled me up.

Heading back down the mountain, wind in my hair!

Back in Lauterbrunnen it’s time to pack up once again.  We are leaving tomorrow morning for Kappelen.  We will be meeting the people that we will be Housesitting for and there I’ll stay for the next three weeks.  Mary is heading home in one week. 😩
