Rethymno

Today we head up island to Rethymno.  We’re feeling more comfortable about getting around.  Signage in Greece is very tricky.  It takes just over an hour.  After finding parking we head to the Fortress and Old Town.

As we walk the perimeter of the fort we see some people swimming.  The water is so clear.

Down in Old Town by the harbour.  Lots of restaurants and shops.

Winding lanes full of shops.

So colourful.

And then we head in to the fort.

This fortress was built in the 16th century by the Venetians who occupied Crete (1204-1669) in order to protect its citizens from Ottoman invasions.  It is built on the hill of Paleokastro.

St. Catherine’s Church

Sultan Ibrahim Khan Mosque

Down inside the Warehouse complex of the northern auxiliary gate.

View down to the water from the fortress.  If you look closely you can see a paraglider.

Lunch after walking around the fortress.  It was so hot so we appreciated the shade and cool breeze off the water.

Home again.  Back at our hotel enjoying a little downtime by the pool.  Getting caught up on my blog.  Tomorrow we leave for Heraklion for two nights.
