Kalambaka and Meteora

This morning we leave our lovely hotel behind and head off to see the monasteries at Meteora.

We head off to Meteora to see the monasteries.  These monasteries were constructed in the 16th century to escape persecution.

Here you can see the venicular working and also the rope to work the pulley lifting things up to the monastery.

Monastery of the Holy Trinity

The winch to raise and lower the platform for bringing materials up to the monastery.

The platform for moving goods up into the monasteries.

Barrel for holding wine.  16th century.

Monastery of Varlaam

Monastery St Stephen.  This is a nunnery.

Bells at St Stephens

As we are leaving the area we spot hikers.  The monks discourage them. The same as they discourage filming for movies.  We are now on our way back to Athens.  It’s a good four hour drive.  We are being dropped off with Josh where we will share a taxi to the airport.  We will catch the shuttle to our next hotel in Rafina.

Lovely hotel.  We had a view of the sea.

Beach in Rafina.

Had a nice lunch down by the water.

Fish market.

Our flight to Chania was delayed but we are finally ready to leave Rafina and go to the airport.  It’s only a 50 minute flight.
