Naxos

We awake this morning to very windy conditions.  It was in the weather forecast.  Two days of windy weather.

We left our hotel in Santorini early to make sure we allowed enough time to take the bus down to the port to catch our 10:15 ferry to Naxos.  We get to the bus station at 8:00 only to be told that we had just missed the bus and the next one wasn’t until 9:15!  This wasn’t what we had been told by the lady at our hotel so we decide we will just have to pay for taxi to the port.  We get a ride for 35€ and arrive at the port at 8:45 am. Lots of time. But no one is there!  It’s very quiet.  The wind is really blowing but we have been told this is nothing and ferries will still sail.  Surprise!  Ferry is cancelled!  The next one might go but not until 12:30.  Great!  There’s nothing we can do except wait.  We meet some other interesting people as everyone is finding out that the ferry is cancelled and everyone is having to wait.  The wind is about 60 mph and gusting.  The sea is white caps and really rough.  Finally at about 2:00 pm the ferry arrived and we were herded on.  It is so rough.

We arrive at Naxos 1-1/2 hours later and you can barely stand to get off the ferry.  The ferry has trouble landing but finally we are off.  Gale force winds.

We are picked up at the port which is lovely.  This is our new home for three nights.  Naxos Dream Oniro Studios.  It’s very comfortable and we walk around trying to get orientated.  It’s hard with the wind.  It’s really strong and it’s made it cold.  We are told this never happens in May but it’s global warming.  What can you do?

We walk down along the waterfront.  There are so many restaurants and shops.  It’s really very beautiful but still very windy.

Fresh fish is very popular.  Caught today.

Octopus drying.

Then we find the Old Market.  It’s a maze of lane ways and shops.

We decide to go to the Doukato which is a restaurant recommended by the owner of the place we are staying at.  Located by an old Monastery it was tricky to find but so worth it.

Marlene had seafood linguine

And I had the local white fish cooked in parchment paper with vegetables.  It was delicious.

Beautiful sunset as we walk back to our place. (It’s still incredibly windy).
