Rottnest Island

Today we head out to spend the day on Rottnest Island.  We take the train to Fremantle where we board the Rottnest Ferry to the island.  This island is famous for its beaches, snorkeling and Quokkas (a friendly marsupial only found on Rottnest Island and a small area of southern Australia).

Train station in Wellard.

We arrive on Rottnest Island after 1 hour on the train and a quick ferry ride over from Fremantle.

This is a map of the island.

We start with a coffee and then start our journey around the island by hop on hop off bus.  The island is only 11 km long and 4.5 km wide.  There are 19 stops.  A lot of people ride bicycles.  It would be a great way to get around but yesterday it was 38 degrees out so we weren’t sure how far we’d get but the weather changed and it was only 22 degrees and cloudy today.  Not as pretty for pictures but much more comfortable for getting around.

Soon after starting out we come across our first Quokka.  Cute little fellows.

Marlene is so happy to see the Quokkas.

Gorgeous water and beaches.

A cold beer at the end of the day.  Back on the ferry and train to Wellard.  Next stop is Sydney.
