Wachau Valley and Melk

As we leave Durnstein we head up the Wachau Valley.  This is a very picturesque part of the Danube and it doesn't disappoint.

Terraced gardens.
Beautiful villages...

The rain came down but we kept going ...
And then on to Melk..
To see the Benedictine Abbey of the 11th century...
Magnificent!
The Hapburgs...they ruled for 650 years...
This is the painting on the ceiling...done by Italian craftsmen...amazing as they used optical illusions to create depth and height.

Artist rendering of the monastery.  We also went into the library.  This was magnificent but there were no photos allowed.  This library reminded me of the one at Trinity University in Dublin.  There are over 80,000 books.  The design is Baroque and many of the books were rebound 300 years ago!
