Historic Dalmatia

September 7/24

This morning the alarm went off at 6:15.  What a rude awakening.  We have breakfast at the Oceanview buffet and go to the theatre to meet our group for our excursion to Sibenik.  It’s an hours drive and our guide is funny and informative.  The countryside is similar to our interior however the guide states that they sometimes go 6 months without rain so I’m surprised it’s as green as it is.  We get to Sibenik and go to the historical old town centre characterized by ancient fortresses and a Baroque Orthodox Church.

On the way we pass a winery called Vinoplod which has the picture of a man with a glass of wine. He is wearing a traditional hat for someone from Sibenik.

When we leave Sibenik we pass over a bridge that crosses a beautiful lake.  The water is so clear.  I wish we could have stopped at a viewing area as we couldn’t get a very good picture..

We drive to Zadar where we do a quick walking tour.  We walk to the seaside where we see the Sea Organ.  This is a sound like an organ caused by air being forced out of a tube when the waves come in.

We also see “The Greeting to the Sun” which is a large circle 22 metres in diameter made up of 300 multi layered glass panels.  It represents an astrological and calendric dedication to Zadar.  At night it gives off amazing lights.

This is a water clock.

There are three mansions left from better times as everything else was destroyed during WWII.

We walk through town and see many Roman ruins.

We get back to the ship, have a little lunch and go in the pool to cool off.  It’s really busy and crowded so we go to the upper decks.

Off to dinner at 6 and then the theatre at 7.  Terrific acrobatic show. This is the same couple that was on the Celebrity Millenium in Japan.  Meeting lots of people.  Off to bed.  Dubrovnik tomorrow.
