September 8/24
We then meet our Guru Walking Tour at 11:30 at the Pile Gate. The guide’s name is Vedran and he was born in Croatia. On our tour he will be going over the history of Dubrovnik and Croatia from 1300 to 1900 AD.
Vedran starts off telling us about Saint Blaise who was the main Saint of Dubrovnik.
The Stradun (or Placa) is paved with limestone and lined with shops.
There are fortresses surrounding the old city and the water you can see below is crystal clear blue.
Most of the laneways are very narrow and contain different shops and restaurants.
One shop sells nothing but candy and is very colourful..
One area looks like a miniature Spanish steps as in Rome. This area was used a lot in filming and one in particular was Game of Thrones.
There were several different styles in the buildings as restoration sometimes spread over centuries due to earthquakes and war. There was baroque, gothic and renaissance.
After our tour ended we went for a quick lunch at a local restaurant and then walked the wall. There was a fee of 35€ for this. If you were staying longer you can buy the Dubrovnik pass for the same amount of money that would include several museums. I would have loved to have another couple of days for the museums. It’s hot walking the wall but the views are wonderful. There were people in the water and kayaking which looked so inviting.
We’re running out of time as we are catching the shuttle back to the ship which will leave at 5:30. We’re off to Split next.
