Overnight we have moved to Nagasaki. We dock at 8 am and by that time we have had breakfast and are headed to the Theatre to meet our tour group. Once on the bus we head off to the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Peace Memorial Park.
We learn that apparently Nagasaki was not the original target however the weather was cloudy and the pilot could not see the target so they moved to Nagasaki. Just like Hiroshima the results were devasting. I can only see so many awful photos.
The positive thing is that countries from around the world campaigned to never let this happen again. They donated several statues representing peace and they were put at the Peace Memorial Park.
While we were there a children’s group was singing. It was beautiful.
We then head to Dejima which is an area that was developed in 1636 under the orders of Tokugawa Shogunate at the tip of the cape of Nagasaki.
It was the only trading port between Japan and Europe. It was a man made island so they could say that the trading wasn’t actually happening on Japan soil. We walked around looking at the buildings that are replicas of what would have been there back in the day.
Lots of walking today. We head off to Glover Gardens which is on the top of a hill. Thomas Blake Glover 1838-1911 was a merchant adventurer who brought news of the Industrial Revolution to Japan.
He was a wealthy Scot and he built a beautiful home on the hill overlooking the port.
The view is amazing.
Who would think of a moving walkway up a mountain in the park! Much appreciated!
We head back to the ship for a late lunch. We’re so hungry and have a wonderful lunch including a glass of wine which ends in Marlene having a nap and me going for a Pina Colada on the pool deck.
The ship is supposed to leave port at 5 pm and we have a day at sea tomorrow. This mountain is actually half live volcano and half dormant. It was spewing ash into the air which gave the impression it was raining on the right side.
Next stop will be Taipei.
