Our trusty fishing boat. It’s cold out. 6 degrees but feels like 2 degrees with the wind. Luckily no rain.
After about an hour we see an iceberg.
Amazing markings on it! Blue streaks are caused by light scattering off pure ice crystals in refrozen meltwater. The area we find it in is called the Needles.
We head back to shore with several people being sea sick. We were experiencing swells and was a very cold rough ride.
We next visit the Grenfell Centre. Sir Wilfred Grenfell was an extraordinary man from the late 1800’s who really brought healthcare to remote areas. He was a medical missionary.
As we continue towards Cow Head we see more of these road side gardens. As the soil is better along these strips of land bordering the road people are allowed to plant a garden. Closer to the sea it is not ideal for growing vegetables as you get salty spray so moving a little more inland works well.
In the distance we see a herd of caribou. Next we arrive in Cow Head and check in to our motel. Marlene and I are lucky and have a little cabin for two nights.
Our cosy little cabin for two nights.
Following dinner we go through initiation to the “Order of Screechers” by learning some of the Newfie language and sayings, kissing a cod and downing a shot of screech. Fun evening!
