Good bye Te Anau, Hello Dunedin

Today we start with another tour.  This one to see the Glow Worms.  We start at Lake Te Anau.

We pick up coffee at our favourite cafe, the Sandfly.

Then drive down to Lake Te Anau.  Our boat awaits.

Off we go.  The water is like glass.  It’s a beautiful day.  It takes about 25 minutes to cross the lake to the Glow Worm caves.

You are not permitted to take pictures in the caves as it disturbs the glow worms and is also dangerous as you are walking into this cave with low ceilings where you have to bend down, mesh grating over rushing water and thunderous water falls.  It’s about 4 degrees in the cave and the tour lasts about 30 minutes.  It’s very well done and the guide is excellent.

These caves are relatively young.  Only about 12,000 years old.  After we have returned from the cave they do a very educational talk describing the life of the glow worm.  They are actually a maggot but they decided that glow worm sounds much better than glow maggot.

We then leave this pristine beach and head back to Te Anau.

It takes about 3.5 hours to drive to Dunedin.  Rolling hills and thousands of sheep.  We arrive, check in to our hotel and go for dinner at The Lone Star.  After eating way too much we walk in to town and check it out.  Tomorrow we are meeting a friend of Marlene’s (Bobby) who lives in Dunedin.  They are going to show us around.
